A tribute to Professor Anne Smith
Anne was a leading figure for children’s rights and was the first director of the Children’s Issues Centre at Otago University. Anne was a researcher and academic. Her work is widely recognised in New Zealand and internationally and has been influential is shaping public policy and practice relating to the well-being of young children. Anne was a passionate, tenacious and persuasive champion of high quality ECE. She was instrumental in shaping the Before Five policy on staffing and qualifications in the 1990s and the ECE Strategic Plan in 2002. Anne was also a member of the ECE Taskforce in 2011 where she submitted an independent report taking an opposing view to the Taskforce’s position on funding. Anne leaves us a rich legacy and will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues in the sector. Our condolences to Anne’s family at this time.
