Kindergartens Embrace Enviroschools Programme

A winning partnership between a school and kindergarten resulting in a recently announced Enviroschools Green Gold Award for each highlights how the programme is being effectively incorporated into kindergarten curriculum and promotes collaboration across the education sector and communities.

The partnership between Ōmanu School and Gwen Rogers Kindergarten in Mt. Maunganui in the Enviroschools programme provides an example of how schools and early childhood education services can effectively work together on issues that impact the community. This collaboration promotes a community of learning – a priority for the current government – including positive transitions and engaging parents and whānau in their children’s learning.

Initially targeted to the school setting, the Enviroschools programme is increasingly a feature at kindergarten.

In the tradition of the original Froebel kindergartens in Germany, it is common for kindergartens – which literally means children’s garden – to have gardens where children grow plants and food, and learn about their environment and sustainability. Kindergartens also incorporate recycling, conservation and exploring the natural environment into the curriculum programme.

“The Enviroschools programme is a natural fit for kindergarten,” said Clare Wells, Chief Executive of New Zealand Kindergartens. “Kindergartens have strong connections with families and communities, and engaging in environmentally sustainable practices with children to make a positive different to our local environment fits well with our values and philosophy.”

A 2013 Enviroschools survey of kindergarten teaching teams and families shows that teachers believe the programme fits well with Te Whāriki, the national early childhood education curriculum, and that parents support the Enviroschools programme in kindergarten.

To date there are 80 kindergartens in the New Zealand Kindergartens network involved in the Enviroschools Initiative. Among these, 20 have achieved Bronze status, 4 have achieved Silver status and 6 have achieved Green Gold status. A list of kindergartens within the NZK network involved in Enviroschools is listed below.
