New Zealand Kindergartens Chief Executive appointed member of new Education Council
Clare Wells, Chief Executive of New Zealand Kindergartens, has been appointed a member of the Council of the new teacher professional body, the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Clare Wells is one of nine members of the Council, and the only member from the early childhood education sector. The Council governs the new professional body which is responsible for registration and disciplinary proceedings, as well as providing leadership, guidance and direction to the teaching profession.
“Leadership and collaboration across and within the profession is crucial to our educational success,” said Clare Wells. “I look forward to the opportunity to be part of shaping excellence in teaching and learning for the future.”
The Education Council formally becomes the new professional body for teachers on 1 July.

Bio – Clare Wells
Ms Wells has been the Chief Executive of New Zealand Kindergartens Te Pūtahi Kura Puhou o Aotearoa since 2008. Her previous roles include Policy Advisor for the New Zealand Public Service Association and a Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Education. Ms Wells has been on several education boards and groups since 1991, most recently the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards Panel of Experts, the Minister of Education’s Cross Sector Forum and the Minister’s Continuity of Early Learning Group, the Children’s Action Plan Directorate Workforce Advisory Group, the New Zealand Teachers Council Early Childhood Education Advisory Group (of which she is chair), the Early Childhood Education Quality Working Group and is a member of the Ministry of Education’s Early Childhood Advisory Committee.
