The annual Te Mata Kindergarten Triathlon had its biggest turnout yet this weekend.
The triathlon saw 400 children sliding to victory at Hereworth School on Sunday.
Head teacher Fiona Francois said it was the 10th time the Havelock North community had rallied for the kindergarten’s main fundraiser.
“It was by far our biggest turnout,” she said.
“A visit from the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter Service was a highlight, which couldn’t have happened without the help of the Havelock North Volunteer fire brigade.”

A Tasman kindergarten has learned it’s better late than never when it comes to the Late Bloomers sunflower competition.
The children of Waimea Kindergarten may not be able to reach their winning sunflower, but their 3.2 metre tall bloom has bagged the Tallest Sunflower award in the Daltons Late Bloomers Competition.
The Late Bloomers Awards ran from December 16 to February 10 to recognise the kindergartens whose sunflowers may have been affected by the weather or weren’t in bloom in December when the main Sunflower Project winners were announced.

New Zealand Kindergartens (NZK) has welcomed the Early Childhood Action Plan 2019 – 2029 – He taonga te tamaiti – Every child a taonga, released by the Government today.
Kindergartens are campaigning for the restoration of funding for fully qualified early childhood education teachers, NZ Kindergartens (NZK) Chief Executive Jill Bond said today.
“The Government has so far failed to honour the coalition agreement to restore 100 per cent funding for fully qualified teachers”, she said.
This failure to move on improving funding is at odds with the Government’s Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy, which has learning and developing as one of its key principles.
Southland Kindergarten Association has been recognised as the national winner of the New Zealand Kindergartens’ (NZK) cultural award through its inspiring work to help children learn most effectively.
NZK President James Patea said the Southland team had put huge effort into learning about and observing the best way to inspire children to develop their academic and social potential.

An impressive conservation focus by a little kindergarten in Picton has been recognised nationally by the NZ Kindergartens Association (NZK).
The kindergarten, which is part of the Marlborough Association, was awarded the President’s Trophy by NZK President James Patea. This is the first year the trophy has been awarded since 2017 and it was a privilege to find such a worthy recipient, he said.

Three new members have been elected on to the NZ Kindergartens Board to ensure representation from local associations, Board President James Patea said today.
Mr Patea, who has been reappointed for another two years, said he was delighted to announce Becky Walker from Westport Kindergarten Association, Kaye Heasman from Heretaunga Free Kindergarten Association and Julie Craig from Oamaru Free Kindergarten Association were joining the board.
